Abstract
The purpose of this study was to find out if there were any changes in memory confidence, memory performance, and checking behaviour when exposed to two different types of intervention targeted at individuals with OCD tendencies who have checking behaviour. Firstly, the slow motion technique which is one of the techniques used in behavioural intervention. Secondly, strengthening beliefs about memory which is one of the techniques used in cognitive intervention. These two techniques were compared in order to confirm whether or not strengthening beliefs about memory is more effective in reducing obsessive compulsive symptoms than the slow motion memory technique. In particular, this study sought to extend the scope of memory performance and memory confidence to include not only retrospective memory, but also to include prospective memory in order to identify the impact on the overall functioning of memory capabilities. In total, there were 27 participants, all of whom were in their 20s and had scored more than 29 points in the Padua Inventory(PI). The participants of this study were randomly assigned to slow motion technique intervention(SI) group (n = 15) or beliefs about memory intervention(BI) group (n = 12). The results of this study are summarized as follows. There were no significant differences between groups in both memory performance and memory confidence in terms of retrospective and prospective memory. However, checking behaviour time was significantly reduced in BI group compared to SI group. This means that the cognitive intervention method, which emphasizes the collection of evidence for objective memory and having confidence in the memory retrieval processes, was more effective in reducing checking behaviour time than the behavioural intervention method which makes participants behave slowly.
